A panel of experts from EnglishUSA, The Institute of International Education’s research and evaluation division, and the U.S. Commercial Service discusses trends in international student mobility and the role of intensive English programs in strategic enrollment management. Presenters provide survey information, and Open Doors data, and engage in a question and answer session with the audience.

Cheryl Delk-Le Good

Executive Director

Cheryl Delk-Le Good is the Executive Director of EnglishUSA, an organization of over 420 accredited intensive English programs (IEPs) in the United States. She previously served for 12 years as the IEP Director/Senior Lecturer at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Delk-Le Good has been active in the field, having been on the Executive Boards of EnglishUSA and the University Consortium of Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) as well as serving the NAFSA community as IEP Network Leader. She also served as a Commissioner and Treasurer for CEA. She received her M.A.s in TESOL and French from Michigan State University.

Julie Baer

Research Specialist
Institute of International Education

Julie Baer is a Research Specialist in the IIE Center for Academic Mobility Research and Impact at the Institute of International Education (IIE) in Washington, DC. She conducts research for the Open Doors® project, a large-scale annual survey of international educational exchange in the United States. Her experience includes analyzing trends in international academic mobility in U.S. higher education across sectors, and using geospatial analysis to highlight trends in educational access. She holds an Ed.M. in International Education Policy from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.

Patricia Szasz

Assistant Dean, Language & Professional Programs
Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Patricia Szasz is the Assistant Dean for Language & Professional Programs at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). Patricia received her bachelor's degree in English language and literature from the University of Michigan and her master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from MIIS. Prior to graduate school, Patricia taught English as foreign language in Milan and Rome, Italy. After receiving her master's degree, Patricia became Director of the Institute's Intensive English Programs. Now as Assistant Dean, she manages all the intensive and custom language programs on campus as well as professional development courses for language teachers, translators and interpreters. Patricia has served on the board of California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL) and is currently President of EnglishUSA.

Gabriela Zelaya

Global Education Team Leader
U.S. Department of Commerce

Gabriela Zelaya is the Global Education Team Leader for the U.S. Commercial Service, U.S. Department of Commerce Education Team. She manages and overseas U.S. Commercial Service Education Team programs that assist U.S. education institutions with international student recruitment. She also overseas CS collaboration with partners both domestically and abroad.

In California, she led the development of Study California for the State of California and is also the U.S. Commercial Service Liaison on the Board of Directors. The Study California initiative was developed for the purposes of attracting international students to California's diverse programs and institutions of higher education. Gabriela also led the development of the "U.S. International Education Stakeholder Roundtables" held in D.C. and NAFSA, and is leading the U.S. International Education Initiative within the U.S. International Trade Administration at Department of Commerce to assist the U.S. international education industry to compete globally.
