Practicing Wise Risk Management in Study Abroad

Avoiding risk is an essential element in managing study abroad programs. The best way to protect programs is by knowing how to minimize risk and how to mitigate problems that arise. This session focuses on carrying out a risk assessment for a study abroad program, what steps to take to minimize risk, and how to protect a program against fraud.

Michael Steinberg is Executive Vice President for Academic Programs at the Institute for the Education of Students (IES Abroad) and retains oversight of all IES programs. He was responsible for developing new programs as IES expanded from seven sites to 36.Michael Steinberg is Executive V.P. for Academic Programs at IES Abroad. He served as Chair of the Forum on Education Abroad Standards Committee for six years and as a member of the Forum Council and is a primary author of the Forum Standards for Education Abroad. He was awarded NAFSA' s Education Abroad Leadership Award in 2012. He completed his term as Chair of NAFSA's Education Abroad Regulatory Policy Committee in December..

William Hoye

William Hoye is the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at IES Abroad in Chicago, a non-profit organization providing study abroad programs to U.S. college and university students where he focuses on strategic and annual planning, overseeing risk assessment, crisis management, contracts, real estate, student affairs and human resources. Prior to joining IES Abroad, Bill Hoye served as the Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Hoye has also acted as a Co-Faculty Editor of The Journal of College and University Law since 1994 and has taught law school courses in legal ethics, trial advocacy and dispute resolution and given over 100 invited presentations. He holds a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from St. John’s University in Government, a J.D. from Drake University and a Master of Laws Degree, magna cum laude, in International Human Rights Law from Notre Dame.

A recognized and proven leader in higher education risk management, Paul served The University of Texas System as Associate Director of Risk Management prior to joining Gallagher. While at UT, he administered comprehensive risk management programs to support UT System’s global initiatives.

He is a past recipient of the University Risk Management and Insurance Association’s (URMIA) Distinguished Risk Manager award, a former Board member and currently a co-chair of the Inter-Association Alliance Committee. He holds the designation of Associate in Risk Management from the Insurance Institute of America.
