Education abroad involves the transfer of personal information between countries. This session focuses on student privacy in the context of student mobility, as well as the legal and ethical context with respect to privacy in the United States and in Europe. Learn how to appropriately share information while protecting students' interests.

Michael Steinberg is Executive Vice President for Academic Programs at the Institute for the Education of Students (IES Abroad) and retains oversight of all IES programs. He was responsible for developing new programs as IES expanded from seven sites to 36.Michael Steinberg is Executive V.P. for Academic Programs at IES Abroad. He served as Chair of the Forum on Education Abroad Standards Committee for six years and as a member of the Forum Council and is a primary author of the Forum Standards for Education Abroad. He was awarded NAFSA' s Education Abroad Leadership Award in 2012. He completed his term as Chair of NAFSA's Education Abroad Regulatory Policy Committee in December..

Ramon Ellenbroek

The Hague University of Applied Sciences

Ramon Ellenbroek current is Head International Affairs at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. He is responsible for the implementation of the Internationalisation strategy. His team focusses among other things on (strategic) partnerships, Internationalization at Home and developing staff training trajectories. Previously he was the Director of Study Abroad and responsible for all short term fee paying programs at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Before this he was coordinator of the Non degree mobility Unit of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. That team is responsible for the international mobility relations, student exchange. Previous to that he was International policy officer/coordinator one of faculty’s International Offices at VU University Amsterdam and Utrecht University. Ramon has been part of the EAIE training corps for years, offering workshops and sessions on major International conferences in Internationalization in Higher Education.

Gary Rhodes

Professor & Director, Center for Global Education
California State University-Dominguez Hills

Gary Rhodes, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Center for Global Education at California State University at Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), In this role, he is responsible for teaching courses in the College of Education and taking part in research and resource development, supporting international learning in higher education. He received his PhD and MS in education and his MA in international relations from the University of Southern California, and his BA from the University of California-Santa Barbara. He publishes articles and presents widely at conferences across the United States and around the world. He previously taught graduate courses at UCLA and USC. He is part of NAFSA' s Trainer Corps and is a NAFSA mentor. He has been an active member of NAFSA since 1990. Rhodes is a member of the Inter-Organization Task Force on Safety and Responsibility in Study Abroad. He is a member of the Pierre de Coubertin US and International Committees and supports the connection between the Olympic movement and higher education. He is on the Board of the UCSB Alumni Association. He received Fulbright grants to India (2002) and South Africa (2001).
