Time Enough to Change: Measuring Impacts of Short-Term Faculty-Led Programs

The majority of U.S. students who study abroad do so for less than a semester, often as participants in faculty-led programs. Three institutions administering such programs present surprising findings on the programs’ impacts on students, and discuss instrument selection, methodology, and alignment with on-campus learning.

Lisa Chieffo has coordinated study abroad programs at the University of Delaware (UD) since 1993 and currently serves as the associate director of UD's Institute for Global Studies. She has conducted research and published several articles on outcomes assessment of faculty-led, short-term programs. UD sends approximately 1,400 students on nearly 100 programs annually, more than 60 of which are short-term faculty-led, and ranks among the top ten public research institutions in the percentage of students who study abroad.

Scott Manning

Dean of Global Programs
Susquehanna University Cross Cultural and Off Campus Programs

Scott Manning is Dean of Global Programs and Associate Professor of French at Susquehanna University. He is the founding director of the Global Opportunities (GO) Program, in which he teaches Global Citizenship, a post-study away reflection course, and has co-directed short-term study away programs in France, Italy, and New Zealand. He has presented and written on a range of intercultural education topics, including program assessment, student choices, domestic study away, and a strengths-based approach to study abroad.

Kathy Tuma

Associate Director
St. Olaf College International & Off-Campus Studies

Kathy Tuma is the associate director of International and Off-Campus Studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She works with all aspects of program management including budgets, selection, arrangements and risk management. She co-edited "The Guide to Successful Short-Term Programs Abroad", co-wrote a chapter for "NAFSA’s Guide to Education Abroad for Advisers and Administrators" and worked on curriculum and developed the Trainer Manual for the NAFSA CEP workshop: Managing the Education Abroad Office.
