This session, led by representatives from International Houses from around the world, explores multiple leadership development programs and programming practices that are designed to foster leadership development in residential spaces for both international and domestic students.

Dylan Rust

Director of International Student Retention and Inclusion
Northern Arizona University Center for International Education

Dylan Rust, EdD, is Director of International Student Retention and Inclusion at Northern Arizona University. Dr. Rust manages the International House community and the International Pavilion events center at NAU. Additionally, he also organizes international student convocations each semester and the campus-wide International Week. Besides his programming duties, Dr. Rust is responsible for NAU's international student retention and campus climate research. He is currently serving as the Secretary for International Houses Worldwide. Dr. Rust received his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.

Sharon Bolton

Dean of Student Life
International Students House

Sharon was appointed Dean of Student Life at International Students House in London in August 2015. At ISH, Sharon has responsibility for student welfare and pastoral care, discipline, social activities and educational opportunities, including leadership development. Prior to this role she was Head of International Student Support at Imperial College London, where her focus was primarily on UK immigration advice for students, but also orientation and activities to enhance the international student experience. Sharon studied at 3 UK universities (St Andrews, Oxford and Manchester) and has spent time living, studying and working in France and Spain.

Jason D. Patent

Director, Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership
International House Berkeley

Dr. Jason D. Patent, Director of the Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership (CIL), is responsible for building I-House's existing training programs and expanding them to meet the needs of increasing numbers of I-House residents, UC Berkeley campus units, and external businesses and non-profit organizations.

Jason has an undergraduate degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard, a Master’s degree in the same field from Stanford University, and he completed an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Linguistics at UC Berkeley. Jason is known for his ability to teach and to find practical uses for theoretical concepts. He is committed to using his skills and experiences to foster understanding and successful collaboration among international populations. His previous professional roles include: American Co-Director of the Hopkins–Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies in Nanjing, China; Inaugural Director, Beijing Center, Stanford Bing Overseas Studies Program; Consultant at Gap International; Vice President, Communications & Marketing at Orchestrall, Inc. When he’s not at work or out running on the Bay Trail or in the Berkeley hills, Jason enjoys relaxing with his wife and two daughters.

Doug Weir

Executive Director, Student Programs and Services (International)
University of Alberta International Centre

Doug Weir

Doug Weir is the Executive Director Student Programs and Services in the international office at the University of Alberta, leading a team focused on engaging students in learning about the world and in enhancing students’ understanding of their potential and responsibilities in a global context. The portfolio includes programs and services for the over 7000 international students enrolled at the University, mobility programming including program development, partner relations, student awards and risk management and campus wide programming on global issues. Such programming includes annual international week of over 60 workshops, global education and citizenship programming in International House and delivery of the University’s Certificate in International Learning. Doug was one of the original staff members who created the University of Alberta’s International House in 2004. Doug has held national leadership roles serving on the Board of the Canadian Bureau for International Education from 2008 – 2014 and the CBIE Advisory Committee on Immigration from 2005 – 2016.
