While temporary protected status (TPS) is certainly an important humanitarian benefit, understanding what it means for eligible foreign students involves navigating a difficult path between unclear laws and confusing interpretations. An immigration attorney will answer the most common questions advisers face on the intersection between TPS and F-1.

David E. Gluckman is an immigration attorney and Director in McCandlish Holton’s Immigration Practice Group in Richmond, Virginia. His expertise includes temporary-visa petitions, permanent-residence applications for family-based and employment-based applications in all categories, citizenship, and the immigration consequences of criminal convictions. David is a NAFSA member and has presented at NAFSA Annual Conferences and several Region conferences on hot immigration topics. He also published an article in the September/October 2015 issue of NAFSA's International Educator magazine on the immigration considerations surrounding drug charges: "Advising International Students to 'Just Say No.'" Outside NAFSA, David regularly presents directly to students and university administrators on immigration topics.
