Title IX, VAWA, Clery: Compliance and Support Through Collaboration

Title IX and VAWA compliance requires institutions to address impacts of sexual violence beyond crisis management. Participants will learn how collaboration between Title IX coordinators, study abroad staff, and program partners improves advising strategy, survivor accommodations, and support before, during, and after study abroad.

Julie Santos

Associate Director

Julie has been in the field of international education for over 14 years. She earned a Master’s in International Education from NYU and also holds Bachelor’s degrees in International Relations and Spanish from UC Davis. She has worked in study abroad at a variety of large and small institutions: NYU, LMU, and Occidental College. In her current role at Occidental College Julie oversees the pre-clearance process, which includes medical, Title IX, academic/physical accommodations. She collaborates with several offices on campus during this process as well as partners abroad. In 2013, she was called upon to be a Title IX investigator for Occidental College. This responsibility enabled her to gain extensive training and background on Title IX, which allowed her to become intimately involved with the on-campus Title IX process. Julie is currently serving as the Vice Chair of the NAFSA EAKC Health and Safety Subcommittee.

Ruth Jones

Title IX Coordinator
Occidental College

Ruth Jones is an Associate Dean, Title IX Coordinator at Occidental College. Prior to joining Occidental College, Ms. Jones was a law professor at University of the Pacific, McGeorge Law School. She has over three decades of experience with gender equity issues – from working directly with survivors of rape and domestic violence, litigating sex discrimination cases and writing and speaking about sex discrimination

Darren R. Gallant

Assistant Director of Study Abroad
Brandeis University Office of Study Abroad

Darren joined the Office of Study Abroad at Brandeis University in 2013 after a number of years in academic advising and student affairs at small private liberal arts institutions. He earned his masters in Higher Education/Student Development Administration from New York University and was an undergraduate at Brandeis. Darren's work with students has focused on identity development and he brings his knowledge on student development into his work in international education.

Bill Bull

Vice President- Risk Management
CIEE Council on International Educational Exchange

Mr. Bull served with distinction as Peace Corps Country Director in Madagascar earning several prestigious awards including the John F. Kennedy Award, several Meritorious Honor Awards and was knighted by the Malagasy Government into the Ordre National de Merit, rank Chevalier, for his service in Madagascar. His term ended February 28, 2008. In April 2008, Bill joined the Office of Safety/Security as the East Africa/East Indian Ocean Safety and Security Officer. As Regional Safety and Security Officer Bill was involved with multiple complex emergencies involving both individuals and whole programs and received several Meritorious and Distinguished Service Awards.
