Do you know how to respond when a crisis impacts your study abroad students? In education abroad programming and implementation, staff must be ready to manage a range of crises that may occur. Participants explore ways to assess risk, reduce risk potential, and respond to crises more effectively.

Lorie J. Paulez

Lorie Johns Páulez is the Director of Education Abroad at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. She has worked in international education since 2000 for organizations and institutions in the US and in Spain. She holds a Master of Arts degree from New York University in Spanish Literature. Her experience includes education abroad policies and procedures, sending STEM students abroad, program development, recruitment and marketing, on-site program management, education abroad advising, health and safety, management of the education abroad office, campus programming, and intercultural communication training. Lorie has presented sessions and workshops at regional, national, and international conferences, and has served in various advisory roles related to sending students overseas. She is currently a member of NAFSA Trainer Corps and previously served on the EAKC Subcommittee for Diversity & Inclusion in Education Abroad.

Alisa Lopez is Executive Director of Full-Time Recruitment for the Graziadio School at Pepperdine University in California and holds a Masters in International Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management. She has directed student exchange, faculty-lead study abroad programs and international relations for over fifteen years. She currently directs domestic and international new student recruitment. She also serves as a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps teaching education abroad workshops. She has delivered numerous training programs at NAFSA as well as student and faculty training, presentations and orientations.

Jane Clarke, Regional Sales Director for LewerMark Student Insurance, is a seasoned international educator with over 25 years experience in the field. She is an active member of NAFSA having served on the Region III team in many positions..
She served as Chair for Region III in 2014 with the conference being held in her hometown of Fort Worth, TX. and now is a member of Trainer Corps. Jane has also been active with NAFSA’s Academy Leadership program both completing the program as well as acting as Coach.

Susan Welker
Montana State University
Susan Welker is the director of study abroad and exchanges at Montana State University where she also provides oversight of the four campus enterprise international travel health and safety policy. This includes administration of the international travel tracker, and response to health and safety abroad. In her role, she is responsible for inbound and outbound student mobility through student exchanges. Welker has taught on multicultural education, and earned her BA and MA. She has lived and traveled abroad extensively and considers her life goals and vision in line with the outcomes of sustained international engagement. She enjoys continually learning, and sharing her passion for the field of international education.
