Objectives: In addition to providing patient care, MedStar associates produce a substantial body of research and publications. The library has designed a local authors catalog using a modified version of the open-source ILS Koha and put it online. We hope that this project can serve as a low-cost model for other institutions wanting to track and publicize their research.
Methods: We modified Koha’s MARC bibliographic framework to accommodate new elements such as DOI and ORCID, and edited templates to display the new information to users. Medline tags were assigned existing or new MARC tags, and we designed MARC framework for posters and conference activities. The modified Koha catalog can display records for books, journal articles, and conference activities and can be searched by fields including author, subject, department, institution, MeSH term, and ORCID ID.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Washington, DC 20010
Fred King, MSLS, is a Medical Librarian at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He received his library degree around the time of the dawn of the Internet and spent the ensuing decade immersed in the fields of public policy, disability information, and nursing education. He eventually washed up on the shores of MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he has been a medical librarian since 2005. Early in his career as a librarian he discovered he had a knack for working with computers, and despite having little to no formal education in the field he has been a webmaster, director of a computer lab, and Koha system administrator. If he can do it, so can you. His other interests include photography, book collecting, and writing poetry which has been compared to the best work of Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz.. In the accompanying photo, Fred is the one on the right. Farley, lower left, will not be attending the converence.
Please note: the website URL goes to the catalog, which is still in progress and not yet official as of 20 February 2017.
