Negotiating for Yourself and Your Library

Have you ever negotiated for a higher salary or a larger collections budget? Maybe you thought about negotiating for something but weren't sure how to do it effectively? This special content sessions is designed to give librarians practical negotiation skills. The session will begin with a half-hour interactive session on the basics of negotiation led by Kathel Dunn, Coordinator of the National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship. This will be followed by talks from Kristi Holmes, Director of Galter Health Sciences Library and Cynthia Henderson, Associate Dean Health Sciences Libraries & Director Norris Library, who will share their experiences negotiating on behalf of themselves and their libraries. Finally, audience members will have a chance to ask questions and share their own experiences.

Kristi Holmes, PhD is the Director of Galter Health Sciences Library and an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventative Medicine (Health and Biomedical Informatics) and the Department of Medical Education at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Holmes directs the Evaluation and Continuous Improvement Program in the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS) and serves on its executive committee. In her role as director at Galter Library, she is delighted to have an opportunity to help define new roles and opportunities for the modern biomedical research library in an increasingly informatics and data-driven environment.

Cynthia L. Henderson, MILS, AHIP is the Executive Director of the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library at Howard University. Ms. Henderson is a Distinguished Member of the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals and has practiced Librarianship for over 23 years. She received her Undergraduate Degree Cum Laude from Alcorn State University, and her Graduate Degree in Information and Library Studies from the University of Michigan. She has worked at a variety of institutions: Iowa State University; Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science; the University of Illinois at Chicago; Samuel Merritt College (now Samuel Merritt University) and before coming to Howard University she was the Director of the Morehouse School of Medicine Library. Ms. Henderson is active in her profession and has published articles in peer reviewed journals, and written book chapters, as well as journal, book, and software reviews. She has presented locally, regionally, nationally and internationally on library projects and Health Sciences Library topics. She was on the National Institutes of Health/National Library of Medicine Pubmed Central National Advisory Committee from 2008 to 2012. She was a member of the MLA Board of Directors from 2009 to 2012. Currently she is the Vice Chair of the Joint MLA/AAHSL Legislative Task Force.
