4117 - Securing the Smart City—Data Handling Controls

Monday, September 25
9:45 AM - 10:45 AM

We'll discuss "smart city" as it relates to the energy utility, and the types of vendor solutions that are in place and data that are then forwarded on to third-party vendors. Discuss the regulatory agencies and controls that are imposed and how those are augmented by city policy and internal due diligence.

During the presentation, we'll walk through implementing data handing controls with the largest of vendors and considerations when molding a blanket DHC with the prevalence of cloud solutions. Additionally, we'll consider how to evaluate risk and implement mitigations that are cost effective and legally binding. And how to build a diverse team to develop and champion controls.

Learning Objectives:

Kyle Chambers

Security Analyst
Austin Energy

Kyle Chambers spent the last year at Austin Energy negotiating and implementing data handling controls and audit provisions for vendors that receive meter and billing database exports. He spent the year prior designing the controls and rolling them out to smaller projects. At previous employer, Kyle built the DIACAP packets for DoD systems, clearly defining controls and audit provisions for maintainers. He also was the AFSO responsible for implementing physical controls during its upgrade to TS, though that and his experience with artillery will be of little use during his presentation.
