5113 - How to Hide Data in Plain Sight Using Steganography

Stealing data is easier than you think and could happen right in front of you. Using live demos of several steganography tools available, this session will explore various approaches to covert communications and data hiding in common media files to avoid detection. It will also explore several techniques to detect and/or prevent this activity. Armed with this information, participants will be better able to identify where they may be at risk for data exfiltration via steganography.

David Plude, CISSP, CSSLP, FLMI, has worked in the IT field for more than 25 years. He is currently a senior security solutions architect. He earned his 2013 master’s degree in cybersecurity from Utica College, with a focus in forensics and intelligence. During this time, he researched and tested many steganography technologies. Since then, he has studied additional material with the focus on how data can be hidden and how that process can be detected. He is also an adjunct professor in Utica College’s Cybersecurity Graduate Program.

David has conducted many security presentations on various topics. These includeSafe and Secure Online presentations to schools, home school groups and churches; identity protection to seniors; as well as other security topics at the SHARE Family Education Conferences in Hungary.
