It is important to learn how to convince management of the priorities that exist within information security. Obtaining the right support from the right people is critical to any form of success. Typically we think of this as funding; however, it also goes far beyond into acceptance to drive change and ensure other department participate in security practices. Many times we are forced to resort to scare tactics to obtain that support, but we must learn how to have these discussions in a critical and supportive way that doesn't rely on trying to simply scare people into give us that support.
- Demonstrate good communication methods that will convince management of the priority of security.
- Define how to avoid scare tactics and things that will not be constructive to a long-term vision of a more secure organization.
- Acknowledge that fear tactics that initially work can ultimately fail.
