6310 - Mitigating Authorization Challenges in Massively Distributed Clouds

Massively distributed cloud solutions provide low-cost, high availability services; however, with that value, come challenges in managing authorization. Delays in propagation of data and access controls may result in new enemy and new friend authorization discrepancies. And system testing is complicated by time dependent results. We discuss these challenges and a number of mitigating strategies, including data and access control versioning, fail-safe semantics, distributed transactions and propagation-aware validation techniques.

Anthony Blumfield, CISSP, CSSLP, heads up security and privacy for Google Docs and Drive as an engineering manager in the gSuite Security Trust and Privacy organization within Google. Prior to joining Google, he worked for Microsoft as GPM for the Forefront Security Server deployed to protect Exchange, Sharepoint and Lync on premises and online services. He earned his B.S. and M.S. from the Technion Institute of Technology and learned the ropes of computer security while serving in military IT.
