Multi-scale Change Analysis of Runoff, Sediment and Water Temperature in the Midstream of Yarlung Zangbo River

The interaction process of runoff, sediment and water temperature is the dynamical source of the environment evolution in aquatic system. The process has significant specificity in Tibetan Plateau owing to its unique and complex geographical and climatic features. Based on the hydrological monitoring data for over recent 50 years (1956-2013) from four main stations (Lhatse, Nugesha, Yangcun and Nuxia) along the midstream of Yarlung Zangbo River, this study investigated the variation characteristics of different variables, including water level, discharge, sediment concentration, suspended sediment discharge and water temperature. Also, the tendency, mutation, periodicity, synchronicity and correlation of these spatiotemporal series have been systematic analyzed by using various statistical methods which cover wavelet analysis, Mann-Kendall test, Cramer inspection and auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. The result showed a significant covariability among discharge, sediment concentration and water temperature (R2=0.43-0.78) in the study reach. A multi-level structure of space-time was proved to exist for each hydrological variable. In temporal scale, periodic oscillation has appeared repeatedly, with an almost same primary period and significantly different phased characteristics. In spatial scale, the complex variation and dependency along the river were noticed. Furthermore, long-term evolution rhythm, long distance variation and interactive effect between different hydrological variables were analyzed. The variation cycle, amplitude, intensity and mutation point were determined under different temporal scales (annual, seasonal and monthly scales); and the asynchrony eigenvalues of different variables process curves were also confirmed. These outcomes could support quantitative assessment and mathematical modelling of the water temperature and sediment in Yarlung Zangbo River under the condition of runoff change, and also provide reference for research on dynamic response of aquatic environment to water temperature and sediment.
