Characteristics of Microbial Communities from Sediments in the Source Region of the Yangtze River

Tibet is one of the most important regions to assess the responses of biogeochemical processes to climate changes. As the most abundant organisms, microorganisms in sediments greatly contribute to biogeochemical processes in river ecosystems. To explore the potential response of microorganisms involved in carbon and nitrogen biogeochemical processes in the Tibetan rivers to global warming, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of microbial community in the Tibetan rivers. Here, we studied the microbial community diversity and abundance in the source region of the Yangtze River ranging from 4700 to 3600 meters above sea level via pyrosequencing and quantitative PCR methods. Totally, the bacterial community in the source region of the Yangtze River showed much lower diversity than those from the middle and lower Yangtze River, predominated by Proteobacteria (37.6%), Acidobacteria (13.8%), Nitrospirae (12.5%) and Actinobacteria (10.6%). The bacterial community structures were distinct for most tributaries of the source region of the Yangtze River, but their community diversity was negatively in line with altitude in the Tibet. In addition, significant correlations were observed between the abundance of nitrogen-cycling bacteria and altitude. Although anammox commonly exists in sediments of source region, the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria is less abundant at higher altitudes, and denitrifying bacteria (nirS and nirK) were in opposites. The above results could provide important information for further researches in the responses of microbial-mediated biogeochemical processes to climate warming.
