Water Level Control for Quality of Lake: A Case Study of Cihu

Abstract: In order to help water administration departments own a new strategy to improve lake water quality, a concept of water quality control is discussed in this article. This concept refers to make lake water quality achieves the environment objective of water function zone by controlling lake water level on the condition of fixed way of pollutants production (fixed discharge flow with fixed pollutants quantity, fixed discharge time series and fixed position of discharging outlets). Based on above concept, combining water environmental capacity concept, water pollution carrying capacity concept and lake water quality equation, this article, choosing COD as typical pollutant, comes up with three different methods to calculate water level controlling quality of lake. The three methods are water environmental capacity method, water pollution carrying capacity method and lake water quality equation method, respectively. The water level controlling quality of lake refers to the lowest water level or water level interval a lake should maintain to make lake water quality achieves the environment objective of water function zone. Using this three methods to study lake cihu, Huangshi, Hubei province. The result shows: (1) It’s helpful for improving lake water quality by controlling its water level. (2) Among the calculated water level controlling quality of lake, water environmental capacity method is the biggest, water pollution carrying capacity method is the smallest and lake water quality equation method is between the two. (3) This study could be used widely for it’s essentially a reverse application of water environmental capacity or water pollution carrying capacity which be used universally in water pollution control nowadays.
