Simulating and Visualizing Hydrological Models for Online Collaboration Based on Gis

Hydrological models are created for addressing a specific research problem. A wide variety of models are applied for hydrology simulation in various watersheds or regions due to different topographical and climatic conditions. Two classes of modeling tools are commonly used, one of which is river-operation models for sorting out demands under rule-based systems. The other is distributed-parameter hydrological models for quantifying supply. A hydrological model ordinarily exists for a particular geographic location in a particular project, and preserved by different researchers or organizations after the project finished. Stand-alone software packages of hydrological models are developed with the development of computer science so that hydrology simulation can be processed more efficiently. However, models can be hardly utilized by other researchers because of diversity and complexity, even though the owners are willing to contribute their models. To avoid the duplication of efforts, and enable model reutilize through collaboration for management, research and education, a prototype of browser/server platform based on Geographic Information System, called the Hydrological Model Collaboration Platform, is introduced in this article. The platform are constructed by a four-layer structure, which are respectively data import layer, application support layer, model layer and visualization layer. Hydrologic data, rainfall data and topographic data are included as the import layer, while different hydrological model processors with standard interfaces are as the model layer, so that various models can be unified in this platform.
