Trends of Potential Evapotranspiration and Evaporation Paradox in Jiangxi Province

Abstract: In order to analyze the trend of change on potential evapotranspiration in the past 55 years and discussed the existence of the "evaporation paradox" in Jiangxi Province. According to the monthly meteorological data of 15 years (1957-2011) from the 15 country weather stations in Jiangxi province, the study calculated the potential evapotranspiration (ET0) by Penman-Monteith formula and analyzed the space-time change rules of ET0 by spatial interpolation and data mining technology, then obtained partial derivatives each variable of the Penman-Monteith formula and measured the causes of ET0 variation and the sensitivity to each variable quantitatively by total differential and partial derivatives of each variable coefficient. The results showed that the annual average ET0 of Jiangxi province was reduced significantly, while its’ temperature was increased remarkably, and then "evaporation paradox" was formed. Compared to the years before 1970, the average potential evaporation of year, flood and non-flood seasons from 1970 to 2011 were reduced 0.20 mm·d-1, 0.10 mm·d-1 and 0.31 mm·d-1, respectively, and because of the decrease of the sunshine duration and average of wind speed, the average potential evaporation of year, flood and non-flood seasons decreased by 0.19 and 0.04 mm·d-1, 0.13 and 0.03 mm·d-1, 0.13 and 0.03 mm·d-1, respectively. Meanwhile, the partial derivative of ET0 was biggest to sunshine duration and average wind velocity. After the study, we declared that the change rules of ET0 and temperature difference in Jiangxi province was mainly caused by the sunshine duration and average wind speed.
