6609.3 - The Huygens Crater of Mars: A Case Study using GIS and Video Game Engines

By combining Geographic Information System (GIS) datasets for Mars and creating a fairly complex pipeline to import this data into the Unity video game engine, the end result is an interactive and portable 3D map. This map pipeline can be adapted for multiple objectives including mission planning, site analysis, and augmented reality exploration. By using a video game engine application, future Mars explorers will experience multiple benefits which include flexible system scaling, lower memory requirements, improved familiarization with the area, and intuitive navigation for Regions of Interest.

Joseph Moran (J.J.) has several years of experience in the field of GIS. He currently holds his Bachelors of Art in Geography with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems from the University of North Texas. Some of his past career accomplishments have included preliminary cultural resource mapping of the Keystone Pipeline Project, U.S. Army's Synthetic Environment Core staff member, and as an Aerial Image Technician for the United States Department of Agriculture's WRP Program.

Mátyás Gede is a senior lecturer at the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. His main fields of interest are globe digitising, virtual globes, webcartography and map projections. He is the vice chair of the ICA Commission on Cartographic Heritage into the Digital.
