Abstract
Cartography and GIS have become increasingly intertwined recently. GIS is a rapidly growing field that incorporates knowledge from different disciplines. Maps are utilized for various scientific investigations and drawing of valid conclusions. The paper traced the history of JAMB as it affects the educationaldevelopment in Nigeria. Itassessed the application of GIS technology in development of education in relation to the operations of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The data for the production of these thematic maps was obtained from JAMB database. The data is made up of total number of candidates that sat for the selection examination- the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for a five year period (2011-2015).Twelve topical issues were selected-total number of candidates applying for selection into tertiary education and gender, total selected for admission and gender, total number of candidates applying from the six geopolitical zones and gender, total number of candidates involved in examination malpractice and gender, number of approved universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and innovative enterprises institutes. To visualize this data by making it come to life, features or images were portrayed on the based maps using different layers on top of each other. The numerical data was imported into anarcGIS software package. The paper concluded and recommended that the GIS products; maps should be utilized to graphically display attributes to promote educational development in Nigeria.
