A dynamic urban history through maps - the zone case west city and the river janeiro - brazil

The analysis of a city, its urban expansion and transformations can be considered as being as man by nature of appropriations. In this sense, according to Menezes (2014), the reconstruction of historical cartographic databases was a promising strategy to understand the process dynamics and occupation (spatial and temporal). The west of the city of Rio de Janeiro, for example, has undergone severe changes and introduced drastic changes reflecting the territorial dynamics. Initially typically rural economic activities, has developed its urban centers with the arrival of factories, services and military sectors, allowing the configuration of the space through the economic practices that put in evidence the cultural history of the region. The west of the city of Rio de Janeiro, for example, had severe transformations reflecting the territorial dynamics. Initially, the area is characterized by typical rural economic activities, then developing their urban centers with the arrival of factories, service industries and military, allowing the space configuration through economic practices. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the elements present in historical cartographic materials, which reflect the main changes in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. This analysis was only allowed because it was adopted here the GIS as a tool for analysis. According to Cartwright and Perterson (1999), multimedia cartography developed the need to represent geographic information in a more intuitive way, allowing the user to realize more easily the phenomena represented. Through these technological approaches identified through applications, understanding the temporal and spatial changes are more detailed, rich in detail. With so many ways and technological advances we can assess changes over time with a more specific approach. For historical analysis were used two maps, one from 1922 (developed by the Geographical Service of the Brazilian Army in 1: 50.000) and another 1976. We believe that the proposed objective was achieved. Both maps were georeferenced and analyzed via ArcMap, where each map was delineated urban sprawl. The research provided us through the map data analysis, information that helped analyze the main changes in the neighborhoods of Realengo, Bangu and Vila Militar, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Worked through the maps, it was realized an intense urban growth between 1922 and 1976, which resulted in contours of the urban area, much like the current one. A fact recorded here was the consolidation of two districts, non-existent in 1922. Thus, this study not only identified as gave the city advance in this area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, but also noted the emergence of two neighborhoods before registered as urban voids.
