POSTER SESSION A: Ar Hi De Ub Cr

Evaluating visual contrast and hierarchy relations of cartographic features across multi-scale map displays

Monday, July 3
2:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Exhibit Hall C

Visual contrast is a fundamental principle employed in cartographic design to highlight foreground elements on maps. However, few software resources and research exist on how to maintain consistent visual contrast and hierarchy relations across map scales. This task is especially challenging in map series that are constrained by a color and layout template that affects fore-to-background feature cognition, where such limitations counter desired map intuitiveness. Thus, I will develop the theoretical groundwork for a tool that addresses this cartographic challenge. Evaluation of previous work on visual cognition, color contrast, visual variables, hierarchy, feature placement and map layout will be used to determine design combinations of these visual components. These combinations will be tested as schemes in a user study. The results will develop the theoretical groundwork for an application that provide users with definitive map design schemes that preserve visual contrast and hierarchy relations through scales in multi-scale map displays.

Graduate Assistant
The Pennsylvania State University

Bill is a graduate student in the Penn State Department of Geography working with Cindy Brewer on research in visual contrast and hierarchy relations of map elements in multi-scale cartography. His passion is in map design and critical cartography. He was the principal cartographer on the US Park Service project to nominate 10 US sites by Frank Lloyd Wright to the UNESCO World Heritage List. He was also a contributing cartographer for the publication of Cindy Brewer's Designing Better Maps, 2nd Edition book.
