Thumbnail is widely used to improve the efficiency of browsing massive pictures, videos and other resources in the web with decent user experience. At present, the rapid growth and huge number of web geographic information resources (GIRs) put forward the urgent need to develop a similar method to generate thumbnails. In this paper, we propose an automatic method of generating thumbnails for web map services. Web map service, almost the most popular GIRs currently, consists of multi-scale map images among which map features and symbols change continuously. A thumbnail composed by a single picture cannot completely reflect the content of a web map service. Our method chooses a group of pictures according to information entropy and trans-scale similarity to constitute a comprehensive thumbnail. Information entropy helps to find out which areas are richer in content and similarity between scales is used to judge at which scale the appearance of the map service has changed drastically, and finally a series of static pictures are extracted which can represent the content of the map service. Experiments show that the thumbnail extracted by this method can effectively reflect the content of the map with high consistency with the user's cognition. In the context of quantity and quality of GIRs increase greatly, the improvement of user experience becomes the next breakthrough and this research is the initial exploration of this direction.
