4101.3 - Current and Future USGS 3DEP Elevation Services

Tuesday, July 4
9:10 AM - 9:30 AM
Location: Delaware A

The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC) is working to improve user access to 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) products by developing and implementing a range of geospatial web services. Current USGS elevation-related web services consist of web map services (WMS), web feature services (WFS), elevation point query, and prototype web coverage services (WCS) and viewers. Serving lidar data via web services presents challenges in data management, and the unique characteristics of elevation data require thoughtful design of services to address common user needs. Advances in commercial off-the-shelf software (COTS), open source software (OSS) and migration of 3DEP products and services to the Amazon cloud environment provide opportunities to explore new ways to address these challenges. NGTOC has been researching and testing methods to provide direct access to elevation data, and is developing prototype elevation web services and lidar point cloud visualization capabilities. This presentation will present current cloud development activities, demonstrate USGS elevation-related web services and prototypes, and outline the plans for future web services, lidar visualization capabilities, and cloud distribution of lidar point cloud data.
