Among approaches for automated generalization of vector data, we are interested in those based on the multi-agent paradigm: cartographic objects are modelled as agents (autonomous objects) that apply generalization algorithms to themselves in order to better satisfy cartographic constraints. Several agent levels are often considered, e.g. individual agents, like a building, and agents representing a group of other agents, like a urban block composed by the surrounding roads and buildings. Several models were proposed to automate the orchestration of the algorithm necessary to generalize a map among which multi-agent system proved to be successful. Each of the existing multi-agent generalization models have a different approach to manage the relations between agent levels. Here, what we call a level is, for instance, the distinction between individual agents, such as a building, and agents representing a group of other agents, such as an urban block composed by the surrounding roads and buildings inside. We study the unification of existing models, using the multi-level paradigm PADAWAN, in order to simplify interactions between agents in different levels. We propose the DIOGEN model, in which the principle of interactions between agents of different levels is adapted to cartographic generalization guided by constraints, those allow us to unify three existing multi-agent generalization models (AGENT, CartACom and GAEL), combine their behaviors and take advantage of their skills. Our proposal is evaluated on different case studies: first, cases of topographic mapping, and second, the mapping of hiking routes over topographic data as an example of thematic map-ping.

She holds a PhD in computer science from University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6) and an Habilitation from University Paris-Est. She has been the vice-chair of the ICA Commission on Generalisation and Multiple Representation since 2011. Her research interests are in automated spatial analysis and automated cartography, especially automated cartographic generalization.
