The paper reviews various kinds of water atlases published by different govern-ment departments, institutes and professionals in the world over the last 50 years, and illustrates the framework and contents of the first China national water atlas which is still in progress. The whole atlas consists of four parts, preface maps, nat-ural water cycle maps, artificial water cycle maps and water regulation maps, in-cluding 201 maps in all within 255 pages. The distribution and evolution of hydro-logical factors in natural water system, the water supply, consumption, and drain-age in social water system, as well as the water regulation activities of humans by hydraulic engineering, are demonstrated in detail. The China national water atlas is supposed to come out in three years to present comprehensive water resources situations of China for the public and support related hydrogeological studies and future policy making on water resources management.
