The role of Gauss and Krüger is made clear in developing Gauss-Krüger projection. Gauss developed the projection and Krüger had brought Gauss’s posthumous work into the open. From studying such historical issues, useful pro-jection formula was found and this is now implemented for actual usage in surveying in Japan.

In 1980 I entered Geographical Survey Institute, Ministry of Construction (now renamed as Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism), and worked mainly in the fields of photogrammetry and cartography. In 2015 I retired Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and entered Toyo University.

Bojan Šavrič

Bojan Šavrič is a Software Development Engineer for Projection Engine team at Esri, Inc. He holds a Ph.D. in geography and Diploma degree in geodetic engineering. His main research interests are map projections, mathematical techniques in cartography, and the development of tools for cartographers. Bojan is also a member of the International Cartographic Association Commission on Map Projections.
