4101.4 - The National Map Products, Services, and Applications

Tuesday, July 4
9:30 AM - 9:50 AM
Location: Delaware A

The National Geospatial Program of the U.S. Geological Survey offers products, services, and applications that support usage of The National Map (TNM). From the home Web site (http://nationalmap.gov/), users can access various products or data themes, and the launch page (http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/launch/) provides options to find data for viewing and downloading.

TNM viewer (http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer) allows visualization of digital data, while download capabilities are available through TNM download client (http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/basic/). Data content is limited to the United States and its Territories, Outlying Areas, and Freely Associated Areas.

Users are encouraged to integrate TNM services (http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/services/) within their own mapping applications. Various base maps offer excellent performance across all scales in a simple single layer map service. The Hill Shade and Imagery base maps provide a background free of cartographic features and labels, while the Topo, Imagery Topo, and Hydro NHD base maps offer a rich cartographic blending of scale dependent sources to provide complete, multi-scale capability.

Base map services easily plug into most Geographic Information System (GIS) viewers or applications, such as ArcGIS Explorer, ArcGIS Online, ArcMap, Esri JavaScript, Google Earth, Google Maps, Leaflet, and OpenLayers. TNM data and services can be used in Android and Apple iPhone applications for mobile usage and offline applications.

TNM data can be used in offline applications through the usage of software, such as MOBAC, the Mobile Atlas Creator (http://mobac.sourceforge.net/). It is a desktop (not mobile) application that will build local map caches of TNM data for handheld devices, such as mobile Android phones, iPhones (iOS), and GPS. It works with the AlpineQuest and OruxMaps applications for Android, the Galileo offline maps for iPhone, and custom maps for Gaia GPS.

The Topo TNM Style template (http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/tools/topotemplate/) can be used with Topo map vector data products available for download in File Geodatabase or Shapefile formats. The Topo TNM Style template and TNM data are intended to be used together to quickly provide an advanced Geographic Information System user with a fully customizable map in the style of US Topo maps using the most current data. These products are staged in 7.5 minute footprints that correspond with US Topo map extents.

Download services allow access to staged vector and raster data, US Topo, and historical topographic map products. Users can select an area of interest, multiple themes, and data formats for their requests. TNM download manager (http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/apps/download_manager/) is a Java based application that runs on a local computer to enable download of multiple products without requiring the user to click on each individual link. From the download client, users can export and save their Cart items as a comma separated value (CSV) file containing links that are easily imported into the download manager.

Map, raster, and vector data products are staged for delivery in previously defined tile extents and formats to allow distribution through the cloud. New elevation products include 1 meter resolution bare earth digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from light detection and ranging (lidar) point clouds, and 5 meter resolution DEMs in Alaska derived from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (ifsar). Bulk data orders require submission of external hard drives indicating requested products and formats, as well as paying for shipping costs.
