Different distortion classes of the azimuthal and cylindrical projections of the triaxial ellipsoid have been considered in our previous works. These projections make it possible to construct maps of the celestial bodies in planetary scale. However, for regions in the middle latitudes it is advisable to use a conic projection which was not developed until now. In this investigation we describe the development of three conic projections of a triaxial ellipsoid: a conic projection with true scale along meridians, an equal-area conic projection and a quasi-conformal conic projection. In derivation of the projections we use an elliptical cone tangent to a triaxial ellipsoid. The projections are calculated and maps in these projections are created for the first time.

Maxim V. Nyrtsov was born in 1975. Graduated from Moscow State University of Goodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK) in 1997 with degree of cartographer engineer. On 2012 received the degree of Doctor in Technical Sciences. From 2013 – professor of The Geography Department in the Faculty of Cartography and Geoinformatics in MIIGAiK. From 2015 – Professor of The Russian Academy of Sciences. From 2016 - professor of The Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics in Geography Faculty in Lomonosov Moscow State University. Research fields: mapping of small Solar System bodies; map projections; space cartography.

Bojan Šavrič

Bojan Šavrič is a Software Development Engineer for Projection Engine team at Esri, Inc. He holds a Ph.D. in geography and Diploma degree in geodetic engineering. His main research interests are map projections, mathematical techniques in cartography, and the development of tools for cartographers. Bojan is also a member of the International Cartographic Association Commission on Map Projections.
