3508.3 - Crowdsourced mapping in 3d: From sharing to collaborative building 3d models for online mapping

Thanks to the technological advancements in the Web 2.0 era, volunteered geographic information or crowdsourced mapping has become an indispensable theme in modern day cartography and user-generated content has enriched online mapping greatly. One of the most preeminent example of crowdsourced mapping is OpenStreetMap, which is entirely based on the 2-dimensional plane. In this paper, the authors examine the idea of extending crowdsourced mapping to the 3-dimensional space. Specifically, the necessity of developing a crowdsourced 3d mapping platform is argued from a social media perspective. Although building 3d models collaboratively has been a common practice in professional engineering fields, it has not gained enough attention from the mass for various reasons. The blooming of virtual reality and augmented reality today has certainly encouraged the sharing of 3d models online. However, we have seen few examples of collaborative building 3d models and their placement on maps. The authors then review relevant methodologies at stake such as georegistration, point cloud/image stitching, open-collaboration platform, and holographic visualization. After that, the authors suggest a framework of crowdsourced mapping in 3d. Finally, future social applications as well as barriers of crowdsourced mapping in 3d are discussed.

Currently, I would like to explore the potential of building an open platform of 3d models based on point cloud.

Dr. Arzu Çöltekin is a Research Group Leader and a Senior Lecturer at the GIScience Center of the University of Zurich and a research affiliate at the Seamless Astronomy group (which specializes in data science and scientific visualization) at Harvard University. Her interdisciplinary work covers topics related to GIScience, visualization, vision (perception and cognition), eye tracking, virtual environments, and human-computer interaction. She is an active member of several international commissions and working groups, specifically with the ICA and ISPRS, and chairs the ISPRS working group Geovisualization and Virtual Reality.
