FOCIS is pleased to offer a variety of travel award opportunities. Recipients of a FOCIS travel award are eligible to receive $750 (unless otherwise stated below) to cover travel expenses related to their FOCIS 2017 participation. Please note the below FOCIS Travel Award Reimbursement Policy when planning your FOCIS 2017 participation.
Oral Abstract Presentation Travel Award
Eligibility These travel awards are only available to FOCIS members only who submit an abstract and are chosen for oral presentation at FOCIS 2017. Application There is no additional application or announcement for a travel award; you will be automatically considered if your abstract is accepted for presentation. We encourage you to join FOCIS and submit an abstract (saving the $30 submission fee). Late-breaking abstracts will be accepted through April 7, 2017. Benefits The number of awards is based upon several factors including geographic location, placement of abstract within the FOCIS program and funds available. This award cannot be combined with any other FOCIS 2017 travel awards.
Clinical Immunology Trainee Award
Together with FOCIS, Clinical Immunology has established the Clinical Immunology Trainee Award.
Eligibility This travel award is available to a colleague-in-training (student or fellow) to be selected among those who submit abstracts to FOCIS 2017. The self-nomination is only available to the first/presenting author of an abstract submitted for presentation at FOCIS 2017. The first/presenting author must be enrolled as an undergraduate, graduate, or currently within a postdoctoral fellowship. The abstracts selected will be of high scientific merit. Benefits The recipient of this award will receive complimentary registration to attend FOCIS 2017, up to four nights of accommodation at Hilton Chicago, and reimbursement for coach airfare and ground transportation expenses. The recipient will be recognized at a session during FOCIS 2017. This award cannot be combined with any other FOCIS 2017 travel awards. Application The self-nomination process is completed as part of the FOCIS 2017 abstract submission. Recipient Congratulations to Carina Dehner, MD, Yale University, who has been selected to receive the Clinical Immunology Trainee Award to attend FOCIS 2017. She is the presenting author of 'A Human Gut Commensal as a Cross-Reactive Trigger of Autoantigen-specific CD4+ Memory T Cells in Antiphospholipid Syndrome'. This abstract will be presenting during the following date/times:
Oral Presentation: Thursday, June 15, 1:25 p.m. - 1:40 p.m.
Poster Reception: Thursday, June 15, 5:45 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Top Late-Breaking Abstracts Travel Award
Eligibility These travel awards are only available to FOCIS members who submit a late-breaking abstract, and the abstract is among the top-scoring late-breaking posters. Late-breaking abstract submission is open February 8 until April 7, 2017. Late-breaking submissions are only eligible for poster presentation. Application There is no additional application required for this travel award, you will be automatically considered if your abstract is accepted for presentation. We encourage you to join FOCIS and submit an abstract (saving the $30 submission fee). Benefits The presenting authors of top-scoring posters will receive travel award valued at $500. This award cannot be combined with any other FOCIS 2017 travel awards. The number of awards is based on the number of late-breaking submissions accepted into the FOCIS 2017 program.
International Trainee Matching Travel Award
Eligibility These travel awards are available to trainees nominated by an internationally-based FOCIS Member Society to attend FOCIS 2017. A trainee is defined as an individual who is a trainee/fellow; research associate; doctoral fellow; post-graduate; post-doctoral; medical student; or resident. Not eligible: Assistant Professors; Associate Professors; Instructors; Full Professors. The trainee must receive a matching travel award from the Member Society. The trainee does not have to be a FOCIS member to be nominated, but does have to be a member of the FOCIS Member Society. Application An internationally-based FOCIS Member Society must nominate the trainee. Trainee nomination deadline is March 17, 2017. Travel grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited to 10 trainees. If offered a travel grant, the trainee is responsible for registering for FOCIS 2017 and booking their own transportation and accommodations. FOCIS Travel Award Reimbursement Policy
Recipients of a FOCIS travel award are eligible to receive reimbursement of travel expenses related to their FOCIS 2017 participation. All receipts submitted for reimbursement must be itemized. Expenses are reimbursable only for the intended individual. Only one reimbursement may be claimed per person per meeting. Registration expenses and poster printing are not eligible expenses for reimbursement.
To receive reimbursement of your travel expenses, you must complete the FOCIS 2017 evaluation and submit 1) a completed expense voucher form and 2) itemized receipts for all claimed expenses through the FOCIS 2017 speaker portal or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. On the expense voucher, indicate whom should receive the reimbursement (yourself or your company). All reimbursements will be processed beginning after FOCIS 2017.

Note: For meals, two receipts may be needed to show the necessary information. One receipt to show what was purchased, and the second receipt for payment method. Without both of these, the expense cannot be reimbursed.
Travel & Lodging Expenses
Travel must be booked at least 14 days in advance, coach airfare only.
For FOCIS 2017, personal mileage will be reimbursed at US $0.535/mile. To receive personal mileage reimbursement, provide a map (google, bing, etc.) that includes the starting and ending points, to determine the total mileage for reimbursement.
Meal & Incidental Expenses
If a receipt states expenses for more than one person, the individual must indicate his or her portion of the bill.
Per the U.S. General Services Administration per diem rates, individuals will be allotted $69.00 per day for meals and incidental expenses.
FOCIS 2017 Registration and Poster Printing Expenses
Registration expenses and poster printing are not eligible expenses for reimbursement.
