LA River revitalization has generated unprecedented media attention and offers an opportunity for new kinds of involvement from the landscape architecture community. This roundtable goes beyond the headlines to articulate how landscape architects may collaboratively engage in nontraditional ways to support the various efforts to bring new life to the L.A. River.

DnA: Design and Architecture, KCRW
Frances Anderton is the Executive Producer and Host of DnA: Design and Architecture, a weekly radio show and blog exploring what matters in our designed world, broadcast on KCRW. Ms. Anderton is also a curator, public speaker and writer on architecture and design. She has served as LA correspondent for Dwell and the New York Times. Her books include Grand Illusion: A Story of Ambition, and its Limits, on LA’s Bunker Hill, based on a studio she co-taught with Frank Gehry and Partners at USC School of Architecture, and You Are Here, about the architecture of Jon Jerde.

Mia Lehrer + Associates
Mia Lehrer, FASLA, founded her firm (MLA) with a vision to improve quality of life through landscape. She has led the design and implementation of ambitious public and private projects including the Hollywood Park Racetrack redevelopment and its new LA NFL Stadium, the LA County Natural History Museum Gardens, Vista Hermosa Park, and many Los Angeles River-related projects. Mia is internationally recognized for progressive landscape design, advocacy, and catalyzing work for a climate-appropriate future. Among recent accomplishments, she served on Obama’s Fine Arts Commission and was honored with ASLA’s LaGasse Medal.

Deputy Mayor of City Services, City of Los Angeles

Barbara Romero was appointed Deputy Mayor of City Services by Mayor Garcetti in 2015. She oversees 15 departments, including Public Works, Transportation, Recreation & Parks, and Water & Power steering the implementation of mayoral priorities related to immigration protection, revitalization of the LA River, and safer, cleaner streets. She has also served as commissioner on the City’s Board of Public Works as well as City Planning Commissioner. Previously she was the Chief of Urban Projects and Watershed Planning for the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) where she was a key contributor to the 2007 LA River Revitalization Master Plan.
Los Angeles County Office of Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Teresa Villegas is Senior staff and responsible for advising Los Angeles County Supervisor Solis on all environmental policy issues pertaining to parks, open space, water quality, air, energy, and river issues.
Before going into government, Ms. Villegas managed her own consulting business, where she provided consulting services to cities, nonprofits, and state agencies. She is very experienced in grant writing, lobbying, and conservation finance.
She also worked as Legislative Director of The Trust for Public Land in Sacramento running various conservation finance campaigns statewide. Ms. Villegas earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State Polytechnic University at Pomona.
