Three innovative designers discuss the importance of the iterative process in developing design ideas. Through case studies, the panelists share the inspirations that guide their work and discuss their design methods and the ecological systems and cultural meaning that emerge from their unique process.

Mikyoung Kim Design

Mikyoung Kim is an award winning international landscape architect whose work brings innovative design ideas to the urban landscape. She is known for culturally significant landscapes that serve as a powerful tool to celebrate the beauty of the collective human experience. The work of MYKD has been highlighted in numerous publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune. Mikyoung was named as AD innovator by Architectural Digest and has been awarded with design excellence honors from the ASLA, the AIA, the GSA, and IFLA. Her work is part of the Smithsonian Museum “American Voices” Collection.

Kathryn Gustafson

Kathryn Gustafson brings over 30 years of distinguished practice to her partnerships in two offices, Gustafson Guthrie Nichol in Seattle and Gustafson Porter + Bowman in London. Kathryn lectures throughout the world and is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architecture, an honorary Royal Designer for Industry member, a medalist of the French Academy of Architecture, and an honorary member of AIA Seattle. She is the recipient of the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture, the Obayashi Prize, the Chrysler Design Award, and the ASLA Design Medal.
