Soil is the living skin of our planet. As we’ve shaped it to our needs, we’ve often forgotten how essential it is for our survival. This session will review the complexity of soil ecosystems and frame the importance of soil in green infrastructure, urban landscapes, and the SITES Rating System

Micah Silvey

Micah Silvey is the Director of Certification at GBCI where he is responsible for LEED certification delivery and the expansion of emerging programs, including SITES. Before joining GBCI in 2010, Micah played a key role in the development of LEED 2009 at the US Green Building Council. Micah is Professional Civil Engineer who's practice focused on geotechnical solutions and environmental remediation for a wide range of development types. Micah holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and a Master’s degree in Hydrogeology from the University of Technology, Sydney.

Chris Moyles, a Principal and Partner of Reed Hilderbrand, has over twenty-five years experience as a leader in design and technology, with an interest in the implementation of beautiful high-performance landscapes. He has served as the lead for many of the firm’s most acclaimed commissions across all scales and project types, including the Poetry Foundation, the ongoing development of Boston’s Seaport District, and Long Dock Park, among the nation’s first SITES pilot and certified projects. Chris has taught at Boston Architectural College, the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, and received a MLA from the University of Virginia.

Principal and Founder
Pine & Swallow Environmental

John Swallow, PhD, Affiliate ASLA, is a principal and founder of Pine & Swallow Environmental. His professional practice spanning four decades emphasizes service in areas of soil science, analysis of environmental conditions for plant growth, and site rehabilitation. His projects range from initial site investigations to detailed design of soil-water-horticultural systems, construction specifications and construction observation. He has served on the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) Technical Core and Soils Committees for many years. His worldwide built-projects range from new embassies in war zones to campus projects to farms on remote islands to mega parks on urban islands and lots in between.
