FRI-A06 - Better Cities: Reclaiming Land for Cars into Space for People!

In the 20th century, our society gradually dedicated ever-increasing amounts of land to the exclusive use of automobiles. However, the pushback against this trend has begun. This session examines international, national, and regional methodologies to recapture land for recreation and ecological replenishment and to promote sustainable urban growth.

Marieke Lacasse, Principal at GGLO, a multidisciplinary firm that revels in designing projects that reflect the unique character and interests of community, site and user experience culture. The resulting spaces garner awards for their playfulness, highly sustainable features, promotion of health and active living, and long-term site stewardship. She is a strong supporter of affordable housing, environmental, and sustainability causes, serves as immediate past-president of the Washington Chapter of ASLA, and volunteers for ULI and USGBC. She holds a Baccalaureate in Landscape Architecture from the University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and is licensed in Washington and California.

Gerhard W. Mayer


Gerhard Mayer, Principal at GGLO, is an architect and urbanist embracing a paradigm shift towards the walkable, multimodal, equitable, and sustainable high-quality urban living of our future. He has practiced architecture on four continents, with valuable lessons learned in many cultural environments. Gerhard is used to leading large complex developments, and he delights in connecting urban planning, landscape and building design to create holistic value for specific locations. He has been pursuing urban change through a variety of organizations he helped found, or been part of, including serving as chair of the Urban Design Committee for AIA Los Angeles.

Woodie Tescher


Woodie Tescher, Principal for PlaceWorks, is recognized for his leadership in advancing the principles of placemaking, sustainability, and smart growth in the development of policy and regulatory planning documents for communities throughout the state. His work has received numerous awards reflecting their innovation in achieving great communities to all segments of society. Mr. Tescher serves as the Immediate Past-President of the California Planning Roundtable and an Adjunct Instructor for the Masters of Planning Program in USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy. He received a Master of Architecture, Urban Design from UCLA and Bachelor of Architecture from USC.
