The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands has transformed Walter and Leonore Annenberg’s private residence into a setting for world diplomacy and a public resource. This session explores how reconciling issues of historic resource preservation with forward-thinking sustainability in a desert environment has become a key aspect of Sunnylands’ institutional identity.

Janice Lyle

Director, Sunnylands Center & Gardens
The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands

Currently Director of Sunnylands Center & Gardens, Janice Lyle oversaw its development as well as the restoration of the historic house and grounds. Janice was executive director of the Palm Springs Art Museum from 1994 to 2007, also serving as director of public programs during her 23-year tenure. She holds a doctorate in art history from the University of California, Santa Barbara and has lectured, taught, and written on art history, mid-century modern architecture, and museum management. Janice served as president and board member of the California Association of Museums as well as president and board member of numerous civic boards.

Scott Cataffa

Principal
CMG Landscape Architecture

At CMG, Scott leads projects ranging from planning and site design to cultural landscape and preservation research. His design work emphasizes social and ecological connectivity and understanding place through the lens of past and present culture. He values the role art plays in enlivening public space, and brings his experience as a public art administrator to his work. Scott sees design as a tool to engage communities and to build consensus, and his work demonstrates the convergence of these threads.

Dillon Diers

Dillon’s design leadership and management spans a wide range of corporate, academic, and urban design projects. He has devoted his passion to the design of timeless gardens and creation of meaningful spaces with innovative and precise detailing. His knowledge and admiration for plants and construction methods has been an integral role within the firm and in his work at the Sunnylands Center & Gardens. He is currently leading a series of important new workplace environments that are groundbreaking in their approach to site design. His work has received numerous national and regional Honor Awards from ASLA, AIA, and ULI.

Lauren Hackney

Associate
CMG Landscape Architecture

Lauren Hackney, PLA, ASLA is an Associate at CMG Landscape Architecture. She manages large-scale planning and design projects at CMG, most recently the latest phase of the firm’s work at Sunnylands, the Administration and Operations Campus. Lauren brings to each of her projects a multi-disciplinary perspective crafted through her experience practicing in architecture and landscape architecture. Her design work focuses on cultural landscapes and their dynamic issues of place: community, culture, temporality, and ecology.
