This panel will delve into the landscape architect’s perspective of protecting the design vision post installation through a comprehensive landscape maintenance initiative. Panelists will discuss the development of maintenance programs that are sensitive to the environment, meet the client’s needs, retain the design intent, and enhance aesthetic value.
Weintraub Diaz Landscape Architecture
Len Hopper is a landscape architect with Weintraub Diaz, an award winning firm known for creativity and innovation. Len served as Editor-In-Chief of the first edition of Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards and authored the Graphic Standards Field Guides. As a technical adviser to the Sustainable Sites Initiative, he helped establish a set of guidelines and performance benchmarks that provide a basis for the Sustainable Sites Program. Len Hopper served as ASLA President 2000-2001 and President of the Landscape Architecture Foundation 2005-2006. Len was elected to ASLA’s Council of Fellows in 1994 and received the President’s Medal in 2005.

Kelly Duke is Vice-President of Pre-Development Services for BrightView Design Group. In this role, Kelly applies over 40 years of experience in nursery work, landscape construction, and landscape maintenance to assist property owners and their design teams in delivering cost-effective, constructible, and sustainable landscapes throughout the United States. Kelly has served as a part-time lecturer at his alma mater, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, teaching classes in landscape management, landscape contracting, and cost estimating.
John Norris, founding partner of Denver-based Norris Design, has provided his clients with high-level land planning and landscape architectural services since 1985. He is recognized for his bold design solutions that enhance user experience and create value for the project and the client. John has been a longtime advocate for extended post-installation plant establishment and maintenance as a practical means to realize the landscape architect’s overall design intent. In John’s experience, a pattern for future maintenance is clearly defined once the landscape has matured, enabling the project vision to remain long after guidance from the landscape architect ends.
Senior Director, Landscape Architecture - Apartment Development
Carissa Paez is the Senior Director of Landscape Architecture for Irvine Company’s Apartment Development Design Studio. In her current role, Carissa oversees the design and implementation of landscapes for The Irvine Company’s portfolio of podium apartment projects. Carissa has significantly contributed to the practice of landscape architecture over her 32 year career both in the design world and to the greater profession, serving as a consultant to the State Board of Landscape Architects for the Professional Examination for Landscape Architects (PELA) in the state of California.
