FRI-D10 - LA LA LAND(scape): Reflections of the Urban Landscape

Landscape is a fundamental identifier for all citizens. It defines and is defined by individuals and by the breadth of our constituency. Recognizing that a city is a landscape, a screenwriter, a photographer, an artist, and a landscape architect discuss the representation and engagement of landscape, unfiltered or imaginary, in art and the urban environment.

David Rubin

DAVID RUBIN Land Collective

David A. Rubin, ASLA, FAAR is principal of DAVID RUBIN Land Collective, an international landscape architecture and urban design firm dedicated to empathetic thinking and social sustainability in the design of the public realm. Rubin is the 2011-2012 Rome Prize recipient in Landscape Architecture from the American Academy in Rome. He is responsible for the design of Eskenazi Health Hospital’s "Commonground," and Cummins' DBU Headquarters, both in Indianapolis; the University of Pennsylvania's "Pennovation Works" in Philadelphia; Grand Junction Plaza in Westfield, Indiana; and Canal Park and Potomac Park Levee on the National Mall, both in Washington, DC, among others.

Stan Bertheaud

Professor of Architecture
Woodbury University

Stan Bertheaud has taught at Mississippi State University, Tulane, Auburn, the University of New Mexico and Woodbury University. Currently a Professor of Architecture in southern California, he teaches architectural studio and a filmmaking course for designers.
Bertheaud is an alum of the USC School of Cinema/Television. He co-created and produced the documentary series, ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL (set in post-Katrina New Orleans) for the Sundance Channel. ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL was selected by Time Magazine as a “Top 10 TV Series” in its 2008 list issue. Currently Bertheaud is working with colleagues on a dramatic series for cable television about architects, egos, love, hate and flat roofs.

Sahar Coston-Hardy

Sahar Coston-Hardy Photography

Sahar Coston-Hardy is a Philadelphia-born photographer, whose work primarily revolves around themes of race/cultural identity and the environment. She is interested in highlighting identity through the places and people she photographs. Concentrating on capturing landscape architecture and urban design, Sahar opened her Photography studio in 2016 and has worked with some of the nation's to Designers. Since receiving her Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tyler School of Art, she has established a resume that includes exhibitions and publications in both art and corporate mediums.

Ned Kahn

Ned Kahn Studios

Ned Kahn is an artist who has a background in environmental science, explores natural phenomena through his art. His works incorporate fluid dynamics, optics, acoustics, and other features of physics. Kahn was an apprentice to physicist Frank Oppenheimer. For the last twenty years, Kahn has created interactive sculptures inspired by everything from wind and waves to black holes and galaxies. Many of his artworks reveal the way patterns emerge when things flow – making the invisible visible. These patterns are not static objects, they are patterns of behavior - recurring themes of nature. He is a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship awardee.
