Metrics and methods are changing the direction of our work. However, no resulting actions are taken if communication is not effective. Using various focuses of the profession, this panel examines external (clients, community, consultants, etc.) and internal office experience and methodologies, putting collaboration to action.

Ryan Sand

Design Incite

Pulled by the importance of story in conjunction with the environment, Ryan Sand attempts to create places that engage/create identity while supporting environmental systems with social context. A designer, fine artist and advocate within Denver, Ryan has served at various levels, from within the ASLA Colorado Board, lectures, mentorships and within various advocacies supporting the city's diverse communities. His experience spans historic intimate gardens, parks, community development to regional masterplanning, respecting the objectives of the clients and stakeholders while engaging the community.

Anna Cawrse


Anna practices a passion for socially equitable design through the incorporation of community outreach in designs ranging from urban planning to small interstitial spaces. Anna is active in her community and during her time in Denver she served as the Professional Education Coordinator for ASLA CO, Advocated for Affordable Housing and served on the City's stakeholder taskforce to evaluate the effects of zoning on the public realm. Anna has been involved with and managed a number of design projects focused around the complexity of urban design, while weighing the project’s impact on local communities, the environment, and regional economics.

Matthew McMahon

Project Manager

Matthew has focused his career exploring the intersection of landscape, architecture, and ecology. As an interdisciplinary designer at Snøhetta, this has meant drawing from his knowledge in architecture and ecology to arrive at integrated landscape design solutions that fully consider their relationship to existing and proposed buildings as well as their ecological contexts. He currently manages and leads the design of the Willamette Falls Riverwalk, a 22-acre post-industrial riverfront project in Oregon City, OR. Matthew received his masters of architecture at Princeton University and bachelor degrees in biology and landscape architecture from The Pennsylvania State University.

Laura E. Stedenfeld

Urban Designer
DAVID RUBIN Land Collective

Laura Stedenfeld is an Urban Designer at DAVID RUBIN Land Collective, guiding the studio’s planning and urban design projects. She also leads marketing and business development efforts, as she did in a previous role at Olin. Trained at Parsons New School for Design, her experience spans the fine arts, architecture, landscape architecture, and planning. Her work focuses on relational systems in public space, especially arts-based works. Such recent projects include the prestigious master plan for the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the Bromo A&E District Vision Plan in Baltimore; and the Art & Nature Framework Plan for Allentown, PA.

Jessica Pickul

Project Manager
JLA Public Involvement

Jessica Pickul, LEED AP, designs creative programs to engage community members in collaborative decision-making. She has supported stakeholder engagement processes on projects ranging in scope from statewide transportation corridor studies to community space redesign projects. Jessica provides high-level communications and outreach strategies, as well as on-the-ground implementation of public engagement tools, including facilitating meetings, preparing community presentations, creating print and electronic communications and delivering interactive events.
Jessica has a degree in Community Development from Portland State University and previously worked in commercial development in Chicago.
