Four young leaders in the profession, each with their own unique story, come together to discuss how they have forged their career paths, built their personal tool kits for success, and how they define themselves as leaders vs. how traditional leadership roles define them.

Derek Gagne is an Associate Principal at EDSA where his career has spanned 15 years working across three different EDSA offices. Derek’s focus on expanding the firm's brand and design philosophy has landed him in New York City where he leads the latest EDSA studio. Derek has contributed on projects around the world that range from urban design work, mixed use developments, and many hospitality projects. The cultural influence of a project's place is the driving design narrative that Derek works to express in his work. He holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Guelph.

Mike is a Partner with Design Workshop, Inc. with ten years of professional experience. As a landscape architect and certified planner, Mike possesses notable experience collaborating with private and public sector clients, practicing across a diverse breadth of scales geographies and projects, notably residential gardens, urban parks and plaza, resort planning and urban redevelopment. The recipient of multiple National ASLA Honor Awards, he been part of the winning multi-disciplinary competitions, including the ULI/Gerald D. Hines Urban Design Competition. He currently serves on the Board of The Cultural Landscape Foundation and the 2017 National ASLA Student Jury.

Nina Chase

Senior Project Manager

Nina Chase is the Senior Project Manager at Riverlife, in Pittsburgh, PA. She works at the intersection of landscape architecture and urban design; positioning landscape architecture as a foundational building block for cities. Formerly an Associate at Sasaki, Nina’s professional experience includes the award winning temporary park, The Lawn on D, Rebuild by Design, and Sea Change: Boston. A graduate of Harvard’s GSD and West Virginia University, Nina’s career is additionally informed by teaching and volunteering. Nina is an adjunct faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University and currently sits on the board of the Landscape Architecture Foundation.

Kimberly Garza Stanush

Principal
ATLAS Lab Inc.

Kimberly Garza is Founder and Director of ATLAS Lab Inc., a community driven urban design studio focused on enlivening and building healthy communities through landscape architecture and art. She has received widespread recognition for her work, including being named NextCity.org’s 40 under 40 urban innovator for the 2015 Vanguard Conference. In addition to her practice, she teaches advanced landscape architecture courses at the University of California, Davis. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts in landscape architecture from University of California, Berkeley.
