FS-014 - Tinseltown Movie-O-La: Sketching on Location

Join fellow drawing enthusiasts for a short workshop on sketching film location, then discover the fascinating cinematic landscapes of Los Angeles with on-location sketching. Bring your own materials and comfortable walking shoes; sketchbooks will be provided. Participants’ sketchbooks will be displayed in the ASLA Commons. For intermediate/advanced sketchers.

$195 per person; includes transportation, bottled water, catered lunch, and sketch book. Extensive walking.

Chip Sullivan

University of California, Berkeley

Chip Sullivan, ASLA, is a landscape architect and educator who has devoted his career to promoting landscape architecture as an art form. Sullivan is the author of many popular titles in the profession, including Drawing the Landscape. His latest book, Cartooning the Landscape (UVA Press, 2016) concerns the metaphysics of drawing and learning how to ‘see.’ and was awarded the 2017 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. Formerly an Associate at Sasaki Associates, Sullivan was the 1985 Rome Prize fellow, and more recently a Fellow at the MacDowell Colony, Bogliasco Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation.

RICHARD ALOMAR, ASLA, is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Rugers University and Co-founder of New York Urban Sketchers. He has an undergraduate degree in Agronomy from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and an MLA from Louisiana State University. Richard's general research focus is on land stewardship in urban underserved communities with a specific emphasis on the visual analysis of urban landscape elements through engagement in sketching and notation.

James Richards Sketchbook

JAMES RICHARDS, FASLA, is an urban designer, artist, author and educator whose work explores great places and placemaking around the globe. He is a co-founder of the urban design consultancy Townscape, Inc., and an Advisory Board member and blog correspondent for the Urban Sketchers. His book, Freehand Drawing and Discovery: Urban Sketching and Concept Drawing for Designers, won an ASLA Honor Award, and he is the recipient of ASLA's Bradford Williams Medal and the ASLA President's Medal. His work has been the subject of group and solo exhibition, and he travels globally to teach design sketching and creativity workshops.

CHARLES “CAP” CAPLINGER, ASLA, PLA has been in continuous practice for 50 years in New Orleans, nationally and other places. He learned early on that getting your ideas across is critical in our profession and "you can talk better through your sketches because people can't interrupt!” He has a lifelong, inquisitive approach to how to capture the elusive "sense of place" through the art of seeing. Acting as native interpreter and guide, he will help make the sketch session through the French Quarter informative, enjoyable and fun.

ROBERT CHIPMAN, ASLA adopted the use of freehand drawing on pen-interactive computers early on, developing techniques to address a wide range of landscape architectural applications. He continues to design by hand and promotes the value of sketching as a catalyst for creative thought. He maintains a small practice in Austin, Texas, and holds to the dictum that fun is an important ingredient in the design process.
