Two projects in downtown Santa Monica have made way for neighborhood and regional connections that have transformed the heart of Santa Monica. This field session explores both projects in depth, from their regional significance to nuanced construction and innovative details featuring planting design, water feature design, and BIM-enabled construction.
$110 per person; includes transportation, bottled water, and boxed lunch. Extensive walking.
James Corner Field Operations
Sarah Astheimer, ASLA is a principal and Registered Landscape Architect at James Corner Field Operations. From innovative community workshops to design and construction administration, Sarah has been a successful leader of projects that reflect strong contemporary design and a commitment to sustainable best management practices and ideals including Chicago's SITES-certified Navy Pier, Tongva Park, Philadelphia's Central Green, New York’s Seaport Historic District, and The Woodland Discovery Playground at Shelby Farms Park. Sarah's BA is in the Growth and Structure of Cities from Haverford College; and an MLA from PennDesign, where she received the McHarg Award for Excellence.
PWP Landscape Architecture
Adam Greenspan is a board member of the Landscape Architecture Foundation and directs design as a partner at PWP Landscape Architecture in Berkeley, California. At PWP, Adam has led the design of public parks, campuses, mixed-use developments, waterfronts, competitions, and estates during his more than 15 years with the firm. His early degrees in Studio Arts and Sociology from Wesleyan University and his MLA from UPenn, combined with years of horticultural practice allow him to conceive and develop projects from many angles. His main objective at PWP is to incorporate planting-based design concepts and performance-based principles within each project design.

Fluidity Design Consultants
Jim Garland founded Fluidity Design Consultants in 2002 after twenty years of practice in water design, architecture and urbanism. Jim is recognized as a leader in his field and for the collaborative nature of his working with Landscape Architects. He continually contributes to place-making, to urbanism and adaptive reuse, and is a strong proponent of clarifying water’s place in a project. Jim’s diverse design thinking is apparent in every project he works on, evidenced at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Longwood Gardens, Navy Pier and Grand Park, to name a few. Jim holds a Masters degree in Architecture from UCLA.
James Corner Field Operations
Matt Grunbaum is an associate at James Corner Field Operations. Matt managed construction administration for Tongva Park, Construction Documentation for Philadelphia’s Central Green, and is currently overseeing Construction Documentation for the Presidio Parklands. Prior to joining JCFO, Matt was at Oculus Landscape Architecture in Sydney, Australia, where he managed projects from design through construction including the Rouse Hill Town Center, Sydney, the award-winning development Puteri Harbour Nusajaya, Malaysia, and the NewActon development in Canberra.
Perry and Associates Collaborative
Bob Perry, FASLA, is Professor Emeritus from Cal Poly Pomona, and adjunct Professor of Landscape Architecture at USC. He is a recognized expert in areas of landscape plants and water conserving design throughout California. Bob has written three award-winning reference books, including Landscape Plants for California Gardens. This 650-page volume is the most comprehensive color illustrated planting reference available for professionals in California. He was elected as a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1998 and continues his research and work on issues of water and energy conservation, and the carbon footprint of urban landscapes.
