FS-007 - A Day at the Beach! Cultural and Sustainable Coastal Gems

Beaches are beautiful! Therefore, stormwater management is crucial for our coastal environments. At the same time, the coast's historical venues should be preserved and open to the community. This field session examines projects that accomplish both important goals and highlights the breathtaking landscape of the Southern California coast.

$95 per person; includes transportation, bottled water. Lunch on your own. Moderate walking.

Pamela Brief is President of Pamela Studios Inc., a licensed landscape architect wiith a focus on sustainable practices. She serves and Programs Chair and President-Elect for the Southern California Chapter of ASLA. Pamela has designed and managed numerous domestic and international projects. She has worked at award winning firms including P.O.D., Emmet Wemple & associates, The Jerde Partnership, ValleyCrest Design Group and Walt Disney Imagineering prior to founding her Studio.

Jan Dyer

Principal
Mia Lehrer + Associates

As a project manager and licensed Landscape Architect, Jan Dyer has led project teams on various watershed, civic master plan, park design and higher education projects. With over 18 years of experience she has been responsible for project design through construction administration on a wide range of projects. Ms. Dyer provides creative and sustainable leadership in project design and excellent project management skills to all phases of projects. She is committed to the community design process and has facilitated many outreach meetings for the firm.

Karen Ginsberg is the Director of Community and Cultural Services (CCS) in Santa Monica, where she oversees a diverse range of programs, projects and services with one thing in common: people. With a background and experience in city planning she works with the community to create and operate beautiful, accessible parks and recreational facilities for all to enjoy, enhancing the overall wellbeing of Santa Monica’s residents and visitors. She oversees programs and events that enrich the lives of community members - culturally, socially, and physically and oversees the delivery of supportive services for those in need.

City of Santa Monica Office of Sustainability & the Environment

Senior Sustainability Analyst and Watershed Management Coordinator, Envision™ Sustainability Professional, Certified Professional in Storm Water Quality, Certified Stormwater Manager (CSM) and Inspector. Member of the Water Efficiency & Sanitation Standard Technical Committee of the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials, and former Director and present Secretary on the Board of Directors of American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association. Appointed to National Blue Ribbon Commission to Accelerate the Adoption of Urban Onsite Water Reuse. He oversees watershed management programs, to reduce water pollution and use rainwater in post-construction structural Low Impact Development BMPs. He worked previously with The Jacques Cousteau Society.

Skylar Peak

Mayor
City of Malibu

Skylar Peak became the youngest person ever elected to the Malibu City Council when he took office in April 2012, and he was re-elected to a second term in November 2016. His term will expire in November 2020. Skylar served as Mayor from March 2014 to January 2015, and again beginning in April 2017.

Skylar is a third-generation Malibu resident who has lived his entire life in the community, attending Malibu public schools, and graduating from Pepperdine University in 2006 with a Bachelors in Business Administration. Mayor Peak is a lifelong surfer and environmentalist and had worked as a surfing and stand-up paddleboarding instructor before becoming an electrician and taking the reins of his family's Malibu-based business, Peak Power Electric.

Mayor Peak serves as a Los Angeles County Fire Department Ocean Lifeguard, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Malibu Boys and Girls Club and as a City of Malibu Parks and Recreation Commissioner.

Skylar, his wife Janet, and children Theo, Uma, and Dusty are happy to be part of this special community.
