FS-016 - Downtown L.A.: Cultural Spaces—Rebirth and Invention

A renewed focus on the importance of landscape to our cultural institutions is under way in Los Angeles. These multivalent spaces often serve as both event venues and environmental learning labs in this particularly park-poor city. The importance of redefining campuses for unique missions and relevance will be discussed.

$105 per person; includes transportation and bottled water. Extensive walking.

Rios Clementi Hale Studios

As Founding Principal, Mark has led both the design and business direction of Rios Clementi Hale Studios since 1985. Under his leadership, the firm developed an international reputation for its collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach, establishing an award-winning practice across a range of design including architecture, landscape, interiors, graphics, branding, planning, and product design for clients that include entertainment studios and venues, cultural institutions, schools and universities, city agencies and departments, retail and restaurants, and private individuals. Trained in both architecture and landscape architecture, Mark’s interests and innate curiosity have propelled his creative explorations beyond traditional professional borders.

Michelle Sullivan

Mia Lehrer + Associates

Michelle Sullivan, a Principal with Mia Lehrer Associates, manages and designs many of the firm’s ecologically attuned projects, including the Nature Gardens at Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, and the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability at Pitzer College. Her background in horticulture root her designs in climate-appropriate strategies. In addition, she manages large visitor-oriented projects such as Dodger Stadium’s improvements. Prior to Mia Lehrer + Associates, she worked for Walt Disney Imagineering. Michelle’s work focuses on connecting the public to the natural environment, and on making nature’s restorative and beautiful qualities tangible through design.

Walter Hood

Founder, Creative Director
Hood Design Studio, Inc.

Walter Hood is the Creative Director and Founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, CA. He is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and lectures on projects nationally and internationally. Hood Design Studio is tripartite practice, working across art + fabrication, design + landscape, and research + urbanism. Resulting urban spaces and their objects act as public sculpture, creating new apertures through which to see the surrounding emergent beauty and idiosyncrasies.
The Studio’s award winning work has been featured in publications including Dwell, The Wall Street Journal, The NY Times, Fast Company, Architectural Digest, Places Journal, and Landscape Architecture Magazine.

Mia Lehrer

Founder and President
Mia Lehrer + Associates

Mia Lehrer, FASLA, founded her firm (MLA) with a vision to improve quality of life through landscape. She has led the design and implementation of ambitious public and private projects including the Hollywood Park Racetrack redevelopment and its new LA NFL Stadium, the LA County Natural History Museum Gardens, Vista Hermosa Park, and many Los Angeles River-related projects. Mia is internationally recognized for progressive landscape design, advocacy, and catalyzing work for a climate-appropriate future. Among recent accomplishments, she served on Obama’s Fine Arts Commission and was honored with ASLA’s LaGasse Medal.

Melinda Taylor

Melinda Taylor and Associates

Melinda Taylor is the founding principal of Melinda Taylor and Associates (MTA), a landscape architecture office established in 1990. With 25 + years of professional experience, she oversees all MTA projects, from their onset through completion. She has collaborated with artists and architects on public and private projects in Southern California and internationally, including with Frank Gehry, of Gehry Partners, on the Walt Disney Concert Hall Garden. Recent projects include landscape design of the UCLA Ostin Music Center, stormwater garden design for the City of Los Angeles, landscape consultation for the Broad Museum, landscape design for student housing at UCLA, and landscape design for artist Urs Fischer on his Southern California residence. MTA provides garden maintenance for the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Broad Museum. A former student and instructor in the Landscape Architecture program at UCLA Extension, Melinda currently hosts an internship program for Landscape Architecture and Horticulture students at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Melinda is an active member of the Los Angeles horticultural community and has contributed to the development of its unique regional style.
