MON-B09 - The Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail: A Triple Bottom Line Success

Creating a multimodal corridor within an abandoned urban rail corridor presents a plethora of problems including unknown site conditions and a five-month design schedule. The lead designer and the client (both LAs) will present the challenges and methods used in creating a multiuse trail with more than 1.3 million users per year.

Lisa Cowan's practice in ecology-based design began in the early 1990’s on over 35 successful wetland restoration and green infrastructure projects and was featured in LAM August, 2015 “Return of the Swamp”. In 2004 Lisa launched Studioverde (Maine, New York, Austin) as a collaborative of landscape architects and resource-based practitioners focused on sustainable design and SITES certification. Lisa is an officer in ASLA’s Sustainable Design PPN and one of the first SITES AP’s in the US. Lisa brings a social and creative science-based approach in the development of community-focused regenerative landscape systems.

Kevin Burke

Principal Landscape Architect
Atlanta BeltLine Inc

Mr. Burke is Principal LA for ABI., and has thirty-five years of experience on institutional, roadway, college/university, residential, and park projects. He oversees day-to-day design and construction efforts for all public open spaces of the project. and most recently was the CM for the $31,000,000 Westside Trail and the 1.5 mile extension of the Eastside Trail. He was the lead organizer of ABI’s Annual Organic Land Care Symposium which informed practitioners about the more sustainable maintenance of public spaces. He has a BLA degree from USU and is a NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional.

Valdis D. Zusmanis

Associate Principal
Perkins+Will, Inc.

Valdis D. Zusmanis, ASLA, LEED AP BD+C is an Associate Principal with Perkins+Will. He holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University. From 2005-2008, he served as Director of Urban Design at HGOR, Inc., an Atlanta-based landscape architecture and planning firm. From 1990-2004, he practiced landscape architecture with Carol R. Johnson Associates, Inc. in Boston. Significant projects include Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel project, the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, the Duke Energy Center in Charlotte, NC, and the Atlanta BeltLine Corridor Design.
