SUN-B04 - Healing, Reclamation, and Reweaving: The Future of Equitable Development

Landscape architects are often confronted with the challenge of overcoming race and social complexities in the design process. This session will explore the historical and contemporary contexts of community race relations in the design process. Three case studies will be examined that healed, reclaimed, and rewove disadvantaged communities through design.

Elizabeth K. Meyer

Merrill D. Peterson Professor of Landscape Architecture
University of Virginia School of Architecture

Elizabeth Meyer, FASLA, is a landscape architect and theorist who has taught and published for 30 years about the affective power and hybridity of the designed landscape. Her writings deploy thick descriptions of sites and critical theories--such as sustainable beauties, racialized topographies, and socio-ecological aesthetics—to imagine new possibilities for future public landscapes. Meyer, a Professor at the University of Virginia, holds a Presidential appointment to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, a position she has held since 2012. Meyer recently founded the UVA Center for Cultural Landscapes to foster transdisciplinary research and practice on pressing landscape topics.

Hallie Boyce

Design Partner

Hallie Boyce is currently leading the 11th Street Bridge Park project in Washington DC & Knights Crossing in Camden, NJ. She has led the design of the new U.S. Embassy in London from the competition through construction phases and co-led the winning scheme for the Sylvan Theater at the Washington Monument Grounds competition. Other key projects include California Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley, healing gardens over structure at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Spirit of Women Park in Columbus, OH. Hallie has taught studios at PennDesign and serves as a guest critic at the University of Virginia and Temple University.

Vaughn Perry

Equitable Development Manager
Building Bridges Across the River

Vaughn Perry is the Equitable Development Manager for the 11th St Bridge Park Project. His role is to oversee and implement the 19 deliverables for the Equitable Development Plan which fall under three major categories: housing, small business, and work force development. Vaughn’s research interests focus on ecojustice pedagogies, community engagement and green job/skill development. Vaughn holds a Bachelor’s degree in IT from Strayer University and a Master’s Degree in Project Management from George Washington University.

Elliot Rhodeside

Rhodeside & Harwell

Elliot Rhodeside, FASLA, is a founding partner of Rhodeside & Harwell, with offices in Alexandria, Virginia, and New York City. Elliot holds a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of the Arts. Elliot’s portfolio spans over 40 years and includes projects of national prominence and historic significance, from the creation of the Boston Urban Wilds program to projects at Arlington National Cemetery and the National Aquarium in Baltimore. His current projects include major public realm projects on the east and west coasts.

Combining his academic background in Urban and Regional Planning from East Carolina University, completion of the Masters of Urban Design program at UNC-Charlotte, and his professional experience, Ron has gained expertise in the art of creating valuable and enduring places. Ron's portfolio of work is diverse and include notable projects such as the West Main Streetscape & Urban Design Master Plan in Charlottesville, VA which links two of the nation's most celebrated landmarks- the University of Virginia and the Downtown Mall. Ron has a passion for applying holistic community outreach and engagement in the design process.
