Re-Aligning Heritage Policy Toward Mitigation: Barriers to Change

Saturday, October 14
10:45 AM - 12:15 PM

Reducing energy, resource, and land consumption in the built environment is paramount in the global effort to mitigate climate change. Heritage can play an instrumental role in such processes, however public policy has been slow to evolve in response to these challenges. There are significant barriers to better aligning heritage policy with sustainable practices, influenced by limited data and metrics, market externalities in land use and property development, and more. However, a fundamental hurdle involves shifting attitudes within the heritage field itself. Moving beyond the paradigm of heritage as “resources to be protected in the face of climate change” will require transformations in longstanding policies and practices of designating and managing heritage and conserving its values.
