Track 6: INTEGRATING OLD AND NEW – BUILDINGS, DISTRICTS, and LANDSCAPES / Volet 6: Intégrer l’ancien et le nouveau – Immeubles, quartiers et paysages

Calculating Avoided Embodied Carbon in Existing Buildings

Saturday, October 14
10:45 AM - 12:15 PM

Preserving and renovating existing buildings rather than creating new ones is increasingly recognized as a promising sustainability tactic. Every avoided new building prevents the significant upstream environment impacts associated with new construction. These “embodied” impacts can be quantified, to support policy development and perhaps a shift in real estate economics to reflect the true environmental cost of new construction.
