Mary Fornek is a registered nurse with more than 30 years of clinical, infection prevention, and public health experience. She earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Illinois and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Psychology (BSN) from Elmhurst College. Mary maintains certification in infection control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC). She has been a member of the Association for Professionals in
Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC) since 1990.
Mary has worked in a variety of public/private health care settings and systems across the US serving diverse populations. Her professional experiences include infection prevention and control, patient safety, public health program development, and legal nurse consulting. Dr. Marx is the founder of Broad Street Solutions, a San Diego based infection prevention consulting business since 1991. He is a graduate of Wagner College with a bachelor of science degree in nursing, has a masters degree in preventive medicine from The Ohio State University, and a doctorate in public health from Walden University.
Dr. Marx has served in leadership roles in the San Diego APIC chapter and the California APIC Coordinating Council; served two terms on the national APIC board of directors; and is currently on the CBIC board of directors. He has coauthoring several publications, including the APIC elimination guides on hand hygiene and C. difficile, the APIC long-term care and surveillance practice papers, and the APIC long term care text. He is certified in both infection prevention and control (CIC) as well as a nurse executive (NE-BC), and was recently designated as a Fellow of APIC.
Leslie Kretzu has worked with APIC since 2008, leading business development efforts with state health departments. She became the Executive Director of APIC Consulting Services in 2012, and has led the rapid growth of APIC Consulting to a full-scale consulting organization equipped to offer high-level subject matter expertise in infection prevention and control to meet the needs of healthcare facilities, state health organizations and industry. Currently, she oversees the financial, reporting and project management aspects for all work, and has been leading the development of the APIC® Program of Distinction, which will launch in 2017. Leslie has been instrumental in cultivating relationships with state public health officials, and securing grants/contracts with 34 state health departments and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Prior to joining APIC, Leslie founded an international human rights education and advocacy organization, where she lectured at more than 300 universities and conferences during an 8-year national speaking tour, with regular lectures on Corporate Social Responsibility at Temple University’s Fox School of Business.
Leslie holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Joseph's University, a Master of Arts in Theology from Union Theological Seminary, and a Master of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Bonnie Barnard, MPH, CIC, FAPIC is a consulting Infection Preventionist at The First String/Providence Alaska Medical Center. She has worked in infection prevention and control in many different settings – critical access and large teaching hospitals, long term care and public health. She received a Master’s in Public Health in 1983. As a non-nurse in a nursing-driven profession, she became Certified in Infection Control in 1985 to demonstrate her expertise. She has been a consultant with APIC Consulting Services since its inception and an elected leader at both national and local APIC. She has published and presented at national and local venues on topics touching every aspect of infection prevention and control practice. She is most proud of her involvement as a primary author of the original APIC/CHICA Infection Control Professional and Practice Standards, 1999. As a seasoned IP, she now focuses on the mentoring of novice IPs.
